In the construction various terms are used for some specific materials or mixer. Everybody are hear these terms cement, mortar & concrete, but did you know the difference between them. Don’t worry in this article we have discussed about the difference between cement, mortar & concrete.
Let start,
Difference Between Cement, Mortar & Concrete
Cement:

- Cement is a fine powder that is used as a binder. Cement is also known as Portland cement. It is never used alone cement is used in mortar & concrete.
- Composition of cement: Cement is fine powder made from clay, limestone, shells & silica sand mixer with other materials.
Types of cement:
In the market various types of cements are available which are used for various purpose.
- Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC)
- Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
- Portland Slag Cement (PSC)
- Sulphate Resisting Cement
- Rapid Hardening Cement
- Extra rapid hardening cement
- Quick setting cement
- Blast Furnace Slag Cement
- High Alumina Cement
- Low Heat Cement
- Air entraining Cement
- Portland Lime Cement
- White cement
- Expansive cement
Different grade of cement:
- 33 grade cement: 33 grade cement has compressive strength of 33 N/mm² after 28 days of curing
- 43 grade cement: 43 grade cement has compressive strength of 43 N/mm² after 28 days of curing
- 53 grade cement: 53 grade cement has compressive strength of 53 N/mm² after 28 days of curing

Cement Mortar is mixer of cement, sand & water, if you want lime mortar then the mixer of lime, cement & water. Mortar is also used in brickwork, stonework, plastering, flooring work and many other constructions works.
Types of mortar:
- Cement mortar
- Lime mortar
- Gypsum mortar
- Surki mortar
- Mud mortar
- Gauged mortar
Proportion of cement mortar:
- Cement mortar 1(cement): 1 (sand)
- Cement mortar 1(cement): 2 (sand)
- Cement mortar 1(cement): 3 (sand)
- Cement mortar 1(cement): 4 (sand)
- Cement mortar 1(cement): 5 (sand)
- Cement mortar 1(cement): 6 (sand)
Concrete:

Concrete is mixer of building materials like cement, sand, aggregate & water. Admixtures are sometimes used in concrete to modify its properties. Concrete is giving structural strength to building. Concrete is used in various construction work like concreting in slab, pathway, bridges, roadwork, PCC, shear wall & other area.
Proportions are used in construction:
- M5 concrete grade – 1 (cement): 5 (sand) : 10 (Aggregate)
- M7.5 grade – 1 (cement) :4 (sand) :8 (aggregate)
- M10 grade – 1 (cement) :3 (sand) :6 (aggregate)
- M15 grade –1 (cement) :2 (sand) :4 (aggregate)
- M20 grade – 1 (cement) :1.5 (sand) :3 (aggregate)
- M25 grade – 1 (cement) :1 (sand) :2 (aggregate)
- M30 – Design mix
So, these are the difference between cement, mortar & concrete. I hope this article clear your doubt. Still if you have any doubt please comment.
