Difference between Column and Shear Wall?

Column and shear wall both are the structural components.  Column and shear wall each structural member has different behaviour in terms of forces and stresses. In this article we have discussed about the difference between the column and shear wall.

02. Earthquake

Column
Less resistant to earthquake

Shear wall

More resistant to earthquake

03. Position

Column
Column are placed in end of the room as well as inner area of room as per structural requirement

Shear wall

Shear walls are along the whole length of walls

04. Lateral Load

Column
Lateral load is resisted to flexural deformation.

Shear wall

Lateral load is resisted to Shear deformation.

05. Width

Column
As per IS code column minimum width is 200 mm

Shear wall

As per IS code column minimum width is 150 mm

06. Shape

Column
Column shapes include rectangle, square, circular, L shape, I shape

Shear wall

Shear walls are wide beam

07. Minimum steel

Column

Required minimum steel for column:

(a) IS code – 0.80%.

(b) British Standard – 0.4 %

(c) American Standard – 1.0 %

Shear wall

Required minimum steel for column:

(a) IS code – 0.25%.

(b) British Standard – 0.4 %

(c) American Standard – 0.25 %

08. Brick Required

Column

More brick required

Shear wall

Less bricks required due to wide shape

09. Used Area

Column
Preferred for low rise structure

Shear wall

Preferred for high rise structure

10. Labour

Column
Need skilled labour

Shear wall

Need more skilled labour

This is the difference between the column and shear wall. I hope this article will help to clear difference between column and shear wall.
