The process of determining the quantity of the different building components is called estimation. Using drawings, the material quantity is determined.

In the construction, there are two methods of estimation:
1 – Long wall method
2 – Centre to centre method
In this article, we have discussed the long wall method.
What is Long Wall and Short Wall Method?
Long wall and short wall is a method which is used for building estimation.
Long wall – Long wall is the wall along with the room
Short wall – Short wall is the wall perpendicular to the long wall

In this method, you must first determine the centerline length of each wall. Once the centerline has been determined, the length of the long wall must be determined by adding a half-breadth to either end of the wall.
Calculate the short wall length by subtracting half its breadth from each end.
In this method, the length of the long wall typically reduces from earthwork to brickwork in the superstructure, while the length of the short wall increases.
Let’s start with an example to understand!

Long wall length = 4 m
Short wall length = 2 m
Length of Long Wall = C/C Length of wall + Half Breadth on One Side + Half Breadth on the Other Side
= 4+(1/2*0.30)+(1/2*0.30) = 4.30 m
Length of Short Wall = Centre to Centre Length + Half Breadth on One Side + Half Breadth on the Other Side
= 2+(1/2*0.30)+(1/2*0.30) = 2.30 m

So we find out the quantity for excavation:
Long wall = 2* (Length * Width * Height)
= 2* ((4.30+0.90)*0.90*(0.30+0.30+0.30)) = 2*(5.2*0.90*0.90) = 8.424 cumt
Short wall = 2* (Length * Width * Height)
= 2 * ((2.30-0.30)*0.90*(0.30+0.30+0.30)) = 2 *(2*0.90*0.90) = 3.24 cumt
Total quantity in excavation = 8.424 + 3.24 = 11.664 cumt
Concrete in foundation:
Long wall = 2*(Length * Width * Height)
= 2 * ((4.30+0.90)*0.90*(0.30)) = 2*(5.2*0.90*0.30) = 2.808 cumt
Short wall = 2* (Length * Width * Height)
= 2 * ((2.30-0.30)*0.90*(0.30)) = 2 *(2*0.90*0.30) = 1.08 cumt
Total quantity in concrete foundation = 2.808+1.08 = 3.888 cumt
For Brickwork in foundation & plinth:
For long wall:
1st footing = 2*(Length * Width * Height)
= 2 * ((4.30+0.60)*0.60*(0.30)) = 2*(4.90*0.60*0.30) = 1.764 cumt
2nd footing = 2*(Length * Width * Height)
= 2 * (4.30+0.50)*0.50*0.30 = 2 * (4.80*0.50*0.30) = 1.44 cumt
Plinth wall = 2*(Length * Width * Height)
= 2 * (4.30+0.40)*0.40*0.60 = 2 * (4.70*0.40*0.60) = 2.256 cumt
For short wall:
1st footing = 2*(Length * Width * Height)
= 2 * ((2.30-0.60)*0.60*(0.30)) = 2*(1.7*0.60*0.30) = 0.612 cumt
2nd footing = 2*(Length * Width * Height)
= 2 * (2.30-0.50)*0.50*0.30 = 2 * (1.80*0.50*0.30) = 0.27 cumt
Plinth wall = 2*(Length * Width * Height)
= 2 * (2.30-0.40)*0.40*0.60 = 2 * (1.90*0.40*0.60) = 0.912 cumt
Total quantity for Brickwork in foundation & plinth:
1.764+1.44+2.256+0.612+0.27+0.912 = 7.254 cumt
For brickwork in superstructure:
Long wall = 2*(Length * Width * Height)
= 2 * ((4.30+0.30)*0.30*3.5) = 2*(4.60*0.30*3.5) = 9.66 cumt
Short wall = 2*(Length * Width * Height)
= 2 * ((2.30-0.30)*0.30*3.5) = 2*(2*0.30*3.5) = 4.2 cumt
Total Brickwork in superstructure = 9.66 + 4.2 = 13.86 cumt
